Forum Theatre: A Voice for the Voiceless
Forum theatre is a powerful tool for community engagement because it does more than just tell a story; it invites the community to participate in the narrative. Built on the principles of participation, reflection, and collective problem-solving, it allows audiences to see their realities depicted on stage and then step in to reshape the outcome. This method is especially effective for addressing social issues, giving a voice to the unheard, and challenging systems that perpetuate injustice.
In preparation for the Day of the African Child, celebrated on June 16, 2025, together with Watwero Dance Initiative, we staged a community forum theatre event in Lukodi, Gulu District. Guided by the theme “Rethinking Planning and Budgeting for Children and Protection in Uganda: Progress Since 2010,” the performance brought together community members, leaders, and stakeholders to reflect on how children’s needs are often overlooked in planning and budgeting processes.
The play highlighted pressing issues such as parental negligence, corruption, and the failure of local authorities to prioritise the well-being of children. Through vivid scenes and dialogue, it showed how inadequate planning, both at the family and institutional levels, forces many children onto the streets, where they face exploitation, abuse, and neglect.
After the performance, Gulu District Probation Officer, Ms Jessica Anena, emphasised the importance of planning for children, starting within the home. “Children are gifts,” she stated, “but many parents misuse these gifts through negligence, exposing them to peer pressure, prostitution, and street life. Let’s stop the neglect and create loving families where children can thrive.”
At Hashtag Gulu, we believe that change begins with honest conversations. By bringing stories of injustice to life and inviting communities to engage, forum theatre becomes more than just a performance; it catalyses transformation. As we continue to explore creative platforms to amplify children’s voices, we remain dedicated to building a society where no child has to survive on the streets. Through community-led advocacy like this, we take important steps toward a future where every child is protected, valued, and prioritised.
