Finding Purpose Through Farming: Rackara’s Journey of Growth and Resilience

Every parent or guardian is proud of their children’s growth and progress. At Hashtag Gulu, we are proud to share the inspiring story of Rackara Daniel, a young man whose journey reflects resilience, transformation, and renewed hope.

In 2023, Rackara’s education abruptly stopped when his father, facing financial hardship, chose to prioritise fees for his older siblings in higher education. The plan was to return to Rackara’s schooling later. However, as time passed, the family’s situation remained unchanged, and so did Rackara’s future, until he decided to take matters into his own hands.

After two years out of school, and with limited options, Rackara began doing casual work in his community, including small farming tasks. That same year, he was selected to join Hashtag Gulu Initiative’s Agribusiness Training Program at our community farm in Paicho Sub-county, a turning point in his life.

“It was a dream come true to be admitted for this training. I wasn’t very good at classwork, so I dreamed of working in agriculture because it’s more practical. I especially wanted to learn piggery, but I had no skills. Now I’ve learned a lot and even got certified,” Rackara shared.

Today, Rackara is employed as a Farm Assistant at Hamel Farm, where he supports poultry and goat rearing and is also gaining hands-on experience in coffee planting and beekeeping. He dreams of starting his own farm, supporting his family, and returning to school to study agriculture at a higher level.

“I’m proud of what I’m learning—like time management, teamwork, and how to follow instructions. I now understand what it means to work professionally. Hashtag Gulu gave me more than training; they gave me a family that’s still part of my journey,” he added.
